Chambers of Commerce meet again.

Following on from the inaugural joint meeting of the Wellington Business Chamber and Dubbo Chamber of Commerce and Industry on June 6, board representatives from both chambers met again on August 8.

Meeting at Geurie the agenda focused on further discussing selected items drawn from the first meeting. The whole idea of the meeting arose following the forced amalgamation of the two councils in May and a commitment from the business community to ‘get on with it.’

In a statement issued by the presidents of both Chambers, Emily Falson (Wellington) and Matt Wright (Dubbo), “Businesses in Wellington and Dubbo are doing what they do best, getting on with business.”

The first point of discussion centred around the naming of the new council. After some discussion it was mutually agreed to disagree on the naming. Dubbo representatives shared that at its July board meeting support was given to the name Dubbo Regional Council.

The meeting then focused on business promotion across Dubbo and Wellington. With Christmas only a few months away discussions are planned with the new council along the lines of shop local campaigns. Both Dubbo and Wellington have history of success with such activity in the past.

The Rhino Awards also came up for discussion with matters like eligibility to enter, what, if any geographical boundaries should apply. It was noted that preparations for the annual Rhino awards commence in March each year. Accordingly, it was not possible to pursue the matter further for the 2016 awards. It is proposed that the 2017 Rhino awards committee pursue this matter with regards to Wellington and Dubbo participation.

There was some discussion on member benefits and the possibility of both discerning more of what members want and how best collaboration could benefit members from both chambers. Events such as CEO breakfast series, Women in Business, educational opportunities and other networking events were named as a few.

It was agreed that there would be an exchange of information on newsletters and website development including member advertising opportunities.
