Zirconia Mine Proposal, Dubbo

Chamber board members Megan Dixon and John Southwell attended the Planning Assessment Commission Hearing on the proposed Zirconia mine at Toongi. A submission was presented by Chamber vice-president, Megan Dixon on behalf of the Chamber.

The proceedings have been widely reported in the local media. There were twenty submissions from a broad range of interests. These included local agriculturalists, landholders, businesses, the Zoo, Regional Development Australia, special interest groups including Inland Rivers Netowrk, Central West Environment Council, Mudgee and District Environment Group, individuals and Australian Zirconia Limited (Alkane).

Whilst there was overall support for the proposal a number of concerns were raised. These included increased traffic, traffic flow, noise abatement, water usage, dust, long term legacy and rehabilitation of the site. The proposed mine is viewed as a major and much needed boost to the local economy. Labour is to be sourced locally (no FIFO workers), there are expected to be 250 employees.

Several submissions highlighted valuing Alkane’s dealing with the community, the company personnel being readily accessible and the company’s proven track record in rehabilitating previous mines sites.

The presence of the mine was highlighted as bringing an income stream to Dubbo and environs beyond the traditional sources of agriculture and tourism.
